SYNOPSIS

When his family is threatened, a shifter must choose between high school and a life of crime.
For the past six hundred years the Byrd family members have been shifters with avian powers. Seventeen-year-old Rolf is the only Byrd who transforms into a dog. Rolf knows that when his mom looks at him, all she sees is a mutant, but Rolf has plans for his future that go beyond shifting.
Rolf is using senior year to shoot Desperate Dawn, a film that he hopes will win him a prestigious scholarship to the University of Southern California. If Rolf can convince Summer Hathaway to be his leading lady, he’ll be golden. But when Rolf finds twenty dead ravens on his porch, shifter problems show up at his door.
Snake bites, wild coyotes, and drive-by shootings–Rolf’s neighborhood suddenly becomes a deadly place to be. Summer’s douchebag boyfriend makes it worse, especially when he attacks Rolf’s sister. Rolf will do anything to protect the people he loves, even if it means giving up on his dreams. Hopefully, he won’t have to.
Shoot the film. Get the girl. Save his family. It’s a good thing that Rolf can fight like a dog.

EXCLUSIVE Q and A with Louise Cypress, author of SHIFTER’S WISH

Question #1: What is SHIFTER’S WISH about?

SHIFTER’S WISH was loosely inspired by “The Godfather.” Rolf Byrd is an all-American teenager with a solid plan for his future. He loves his extended family but ignores their criminal activity—until it shows up at his front door. In order to protect the people he loves, Rolf must choose between high school and a life of crime. SHIFTER’S WISH is book one in the FIGHT OR FLIGHT series. Books two and three will also come out this summer, and books four, five, and six will release in fall of 2019.

Question #2: In SHIFTER’S WISH, your main character, Rolf Byrd, is a dog shifter who can transform into any type of dog he wants. Why did you choose dogs instead of another animal?

There was never any question about what type of animal my main character should become. Dogs are loyal, loving, brave, and kind, and that describes Rolf. Although I would love the opportunity of having a cat in my life, I’m allergic. So I’ve always been a dog person.

Question #3: What other types of shifters are in your book?

In my world, there are three main types of shifters, Byrds—who transform into birds, Ferrells—who can become rodents, and Serpentes—who are reptile shifters. What makes Rolf special is that he’s the first canine shifter in over a century. Rolf’s mom is a Static, but she carries the canine genes for shifting. When Rolf’s mom married his dad (a bird shifter), the canine genes dominated, and that’s how Rolf ended up as dog. Together, the three shifter families form their own crime organization. They siphon off money from drug cartels and use the funds to preserve shifter heritage and avoid extinction.

Question #4: Does Rolf have a love interest?

Rolf has been in love with Summer Hathaway since freshman year. Summer has a secret to hide and may—or may not—be worthy of Rolf’s attention. Part of the fun of this six book series will be watching Rolf’s romantic relationships make him wiser. Rolf is definitely a hero who deserves true love, and his soulmate is waiting.

Question #5: What do you enjoy about young adult books?

When I was in high school I was so consumed by classwork that I never got to read for fun. I’ve pretty much spent the last decade making up for it. I love how young adult books deal with first love, broken hearts, and the moments that define who we are. Plus, it’s fun writing about characters who don’t have to worry about things like paying bills or fixing the dishwasher. When I read, I read for pleasure, and I love how YA books allow me to escape. I think that’s why my Facebook page, The YA Gal, is so popular.
