It all started with the bereavement flowers with my name on them.
Not the best way to wake up, right? I work in a flower shop. I know a
funeral arrangement when I see one.
I know a killer when I see one, too. And one is standing in my hospital
room right now, straight behind the man who saved my life.
I can’t tell anyone the truth, because that’s the fastest way to really
die. So I do the next best thing. I “lose” my memory.
I fake my amnesia.
Pretending not to remember a brutal attempted murder has its perks. The
killer is backing down, spending less time around me, loosening the noose.
The less I claim to recall, the more my rescuer, Duff, works to help me
“remember.” I hate lying to him.
But he doesn’t understand that my memory is dangerous. To me. And to him.
Fooling everyone isn’t easy. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
Except it’s starting to look like I’ve been fooling myself.
In more ways than one.

Mom rushes into the room, moving the man aside, her face coming so close,
my eyes losing focus. I want to look at her. Want to beg her to make him leave.
Want to yell and scream and claw my way out of this bed to get away.
“Lily! Lily! It’s Mommy. I’m here, sweetie. I’m here.” Her hand goes to
mine, clasping it like she has a million times before.
This time, I squeeze. I will it. I close my eyes and send the full force
of the universe’s sense of mercy into one impulse, one set of muscle fibers,
one aching, desperate movement.
“TOM!” Mom gasps. “She squeezed my hand! Lily, did you squeeze my hand on
purpose? Do it once for yes, twice for no!”
I squeeze once.
“Oh, Lord, thank you!” Mom babbles, tears rolling down her face,
splattering on my cheek, stinging where the tape pulls my skin. “Squeeze twice
if you want to see Daddy!”
Squeeze squeeze.
“She’s awake ! She’s coming out of it! My Lily is waking up!” Mom shouts.
“We have to tell everyone! We have to keep her awake. Tom! Doctor! Help!”
I look behind her. A crew of white lab coats has appeared, jabbering. And
next to them, the man in dark clothes. I know I can squeeze.
I know it is light. I know it is.
I know something else, too.
I know who that man is.
Because that is the man who shot me in the head.
The man who wants me dead.
And his eyes are staring right into my soul.
Blink.

She thinks she’s fooled me. But I’ve known all along.
Almost.
Lily is hiding something, a secret so big, she came out of a year-long
coma and her first instinct was to lie.
Who does that? Someone who is afraid. No—not afraid.
Terrified. And it’s my job to take that fear away.
My partner and I have spent countless man-hours hunting down the
cold-blooded killer who did this to her. Meanwhile, Lily’s spent her waking
hours recovering. Getting stronger. Getting smarter.
Staying beautiful.
Never get involved emotionally. That’s my dictate. Never get attached.
When you realize you’re caught in a triangle, it turns out there is no
exit.
Crossing a line is easy. Holding a line takes strength.
Lily’s shooter knows that she’s my weakness.
And he’s about to exploit that by breaking a line and escaping, claiming
a hostage in the process.
One I have to get back.
No matter what it takes.
False Hope is book 2 in the False trilogy by USA Today bestselling author
Meli Raine.

If unicorns had a flavor, it would taste like kissing Lily.
Her essence is still on the tip of my tongue as I watch the layered
response Lily has mastered. Observe her as that beautiful mind works to line
all the pieces up and execute the subterfuge, living in two selves, one ever
vigilant, one struggling to stay quiet.
For months now, I’ve felt it. Sensed it.
Now I can taste it, too. Lies have a flavor.
And God help me, I want more of the deliciousness of Lily.
But those lies come with an aftertaste, a bitter acrimony that has an
overriding power.
My own words ring in the air like a gong as I wait: When were you
going to tell me you've been faking the amnesia, Lily? Before or after I sleep
with you?
“Sleep with me?” she squeaks, the words catching me off guard. I assumed
she’d deny the lying.
Not talk about my fantasies.
“You want to talk about that?” I choke out, amused and
sickened. “You’ve been lying to me for close to a year and all you want to talk
about is sleeping with me?”
“You brought it up!”
She’s got me there.
“How about this fake amnesia bullshit, Lily? How about we talk about that before
we discuss getting sweet between the sheets?”
She blushes.
I get hard.
This—this is why I should have recused myself from this
damned assignment long ago. I knew this day would come. I knew I’d have to call
her on the lying.
Worse than that—I knew I wouldn’t be able to help myself.

This isn't how my life is supposed to end.
Then again, a case of mistaken identity got me here. No one is ever who
we think they are. Especially my kidnapper, a man whose entire life is designed
to deceive.
Powerful people want my rescuer to die. I'm just a lure. A pawn. An
object.
But objects hold meaning. Emotions attach themselves without logic.
Like love.
I now know that Duff will do everything to protect me.
If he gets here in time. And if I can hold on long enough.
Because my body can only handle so much. Pushed to the limits, it's
finally giving out. Giving way.
Giving up.
I know Duff, though.
He never will.
Blink.
Read the stunning conclusion to USA Today bestselling author Meli Raine’s
False series, told from both Lily and Duff’s points of view.

Being
locked in a room with a dead body is not on my bucket list.
Being
locked in a room with a faceless corpse, the dim light making his exposed,
bloody skull bones gleam like rubies, is definitely not on my wish list.
The scream
that wants to come out turns inward, helplessness stopping it somewhere in my
chest, comforted by my heart, which only wants it to go quiet. Screaming won't
fix this. I can't find an escape by making noise.
Reality has
a way of dominating.
I look down
at the dead man.
Who is
very, very real.
I move
gently on the chaise, taking the deepest breath I can, holding it for too long.
Suspending myself in time and space feels like the only out. I can't actually leave.
Second best is closing off my air supply, shutting my eyelids, not moving.
Freezing in place gives me an illusion to grasp, the fleeting seconds
important.
My hand
slides under a throw pillow. The cool haven of hidden fabric makes me shiver.
A black
spider, all too familiar, comes off the pillow my hand is under.
That makes
me shiver even more.
I jump up,
shocked by the intrusion of another living being.
The door
calls out to me.
The spider
crawls down one leg of the chaise, then makes its way dispassionately along the
tip of the dead guy's shoe.
In order to
get to the door, I have to go around the dead body. In order to move, I have to
feel the sensation of his blood on my skin. When I bend my arm, the dried blood
on my shoulders and neck crackles. It puckers, like child's glue spread over
skin and allowed to dry for fun. For amusement.
This is
anything but amusing.
