Description:
What do you get when you mix a revenge-driven mortal with an evil God of Death and an opportunity of a lifetime? An erotic fantasy novel filled with angst and trigger warnings.
Death:
I want her dead.
Everything within me howls to destroy that pretty little mortal so that I can claim her deliciously tarnished soul. When I’m done with her, she will be writhing underneath me, sinning like a bad little mortal should.
But no matter how much I long to kill her now, I must wait until she completes the Death Trials my father, The Devil, challenged her to win. Only then will she claim the title of ‘Deaths New Pet’, and I become free to do whatever the hell I want with her. And trust me, I plan on ruining my little mortal until she realises the true meaning of hate.
Perhaps that will be the day when the evil God of Death finally cracks a smile.

My opinion:
Death’s New Pet by Holly Guy is part of the Love After Life series, but it can be read as a standalone.
Scarlet escapes her abusive husband and, six months later, is ready to take her revenge. But her plan backfires and she is killed while attempting to murder her husband’s brother. In the afterlife, Misery approaches her with an offer: she can enter the Death Trials and, if she wins, she’ll earn the chance to exact her revenge. With no other choice, Scarlet accepts… without truly understanding what she has agreed to.
Alongside nine other contestants, she is thrown into brutal, nightmarish trials, forced to battle monsters as well as her deepest fears in order to survive. Throughout the trials, Scarlet catches Death’s attention. Her determination and resilience don’t go unnoticed, and although he opposes the trials themselves, he finds himself rooting for his fierce little mortal.
This is a dark fantasy romance centered on Death and a mortal heroine. If you’re not a seasoned dark romance reader, definitely check the content warnings first, as there are many intense and potentially uncomfortable scenes. The story is intriguing, filled with spice and supernatural family drama. I loved Scarlet as a character; she’s strong, compassionate, and protective toward some of the other contestants. Her moments with Death are intense and magnetic, and my favorite parts were the trials themselves and the way Death looked after her.
If you enjoy dark fantasy romance, this one is worth a try. 🖤
