My opinion:
ARC Review
Over Her Dead Body by H.J. Garbett
Ruth is a journalist whose work has recently revolved around the notorious TellTale Killer. When her best friend becomes one of his victims, Ruth’s life unravels. She leaves journalism and begins working at her uncle’s funeral home, driven by a single obsession: seeing the TellTale Killer brought to justice.
When she learns that the police are preparing to abandon the case, Ruth devises a reckless plan. She decides to impersonate the killer, hoping her actions will force the authorities to reopen the investigation. What she doesn’t anticipate is that the real killer will take notice—and be impressed by her work. As the danger escalates, the question becomes whether the police can catch the killer before he reaches Ruth.
This is a darkly comedic mystery set in the UK, enriched by local dialect that adds charm and authenticity to the story. The plot is especially engaging once Ruth puts her plan into motion, and the serial killer element keeps the tension high. Ruth herself is an odd but highly likable protagonist. Her life is chaotic, yet she remains focused and determined, never backing down even when things spiral out of control. That unwavering resolve made her fascinating to follow.
My favorite moment was Ruth’s encounter with the killer, a scene that perfectly balances humor, suspense, and unease.
If you enjoy mysteries with dark humor and unconventional protagonists, this one is definitely worth checking out.
