Prom Queen by H.L. Crowe is a dark, high school–set horror novel.
Evelyn Rose was well-known at her high school, but for all the wrong reasons. All she wanted was to survive her final year and move on. Despite the constant drama among the students, she caught the attention of Finn, a shy boy who began flirting with her. Over time, they started dating, and when he invited her to prom, Evelyn set her sights on one thing only: being crowned prom queen. She was willing to do whatever it took to make that happen, even if it meant eliminating anyone who tried to ruin her night.
The first half of the story reads like a fairly typical high school drama, introducing the characters and capturing life in 2007. There’s bullying, social tension, and a bit of romance. While this part was fine, it didn’t fully hold my interest, and I think it could have been shorter. The second half is where the horror truly begins. It felt like a blend of several classic horror films, far more engaging than the first half, and it builds toward a twisty ending.
The characters felt realistic and strongly reminiscent of teenagers from that era, which added to the authenticity of the story.
If you enjoy Young Adult horror with a high school setting and a darker turn, this one might be for you. 🩸👑
