Ava McGuire should be dealing with moving on after her devastating breakup. Instead, she’s been thrust into the world of paranormal. As if learning that your best friend is mated to a serial killer vampire wasn’t bad enough, she learns she has her own vampire mate.
Valen has been held prisoner for longer than he can fathom. The human world is vastly different than the one he was taken from centuries ago. For starters, there are tall buildings and places that claim to make your lunch in under five minutes. He’s having to relearn the world around him while navigating the complicated urge to claim his mate while also being wary of touch after being held captive.
Ava and Valen, with the help of their friends, are trying to get to the bottom of what’s really going on in Chicago. All the rain, all the paranormals showing up, and what was the true reason Valen was taken all those years ago?
Ava herself just might be the key to it all. Turns out, she’s not some simple human, she’s the last of the line of one of the most powerful witch families to ever exist.
My opinion:
ARC Review
Loving a Witch Is Totally Foolish by Aura Hayes is the second book in the Total Chaos series.
Ava McGuire is a detective who has recently discovered her vampire mate, Valen. It comes as a total surprise to her, but she slowly starts getting to know him better. Valen, on the other hand, has a dark past—he was kept and used for years by cruel beings, and now he has to adjust to this new world and learn how to be close to Ava.
As if that wasn’t enough, Ava also discovers that she’s a witch. With Valen’s help, she begins to uncover her biological family and learn how to awaken her powers, all while they try to figure out who is behind a series of murders in their area. It’s total chaos, and they have no choice but to face it together and survive.
This is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone. That said, I’d definitely recommend reading the first book to get a deeper understanding of the story and characters. The story is told in dual POV, blending paranormal romance with a touch of suspense.
Most of the book focuses on Ava and Valen building their bond and learning to trust each other as mates. Alongside that, we get Ava’s journey into discovering her witch side and the mystery of the dangerous paranormal beings targeting innocent people.
I really loved the characters—they’re unique, fun, and easy to connect with. The side characters added a lot too, especially the other vampire with his weird antics. I enjoyed seeing how Ava and Valen supported each other through their struggles and how protective they were of one another. My favorite moment was definitely when Ava tried her first spell.
If you enjoy paranormal romance, this is definitely one to pick up.
