Review: In for a penny by Kelsey Browning and Nancy Naigle

Description:
When Lillian Summer Fairview’s husband up and dies on her, it leaves the last living member of the most prestigious family in the small town of Summer Shoals, Georgia, in a hot money mess. Desperate to keep up the family name and give the man a decent burial, penniless Lil cooks up a shady deal that lands her smack-dab in the slammer.

Burdened by her shameful secret and a crumbling family estate, Lil entrusts Summer Haven’s care to her best friend, Maggie, who recruits two more over-fifty ladies to help. But when Maggie discovers that Lil’s restitution is ten times the amount she “borrowed” from the federal government, she’s convinced Lil has taken the fall for someone else’s crime.

Will these gals be able to get some vigilante justice for Lil, or will the swindler get away with hoodwinking a sweet little old lady?

My opinion:

In for a Penny by Kelsey Browning and Nancy Naigle is the first book in the Seasoned Southern Sleuths series.

After her husband's death, Lillian Fairview finds herself penniless and desperate enough to create a scheme that ultimately lands her in prison. Before that happens, she entrusts her best friend Maggie Rawls with taking care of Summer Haven. When Lillian is sent to prison, Maggie is stunned but determined to uncover the truth behind what really happened. With the help of newcomer Sera, and later the sheriff’s spirited friend Abby Ruth, Maggie sets out to solve the mystery and clear Lillian’s name.

How much trouble can three grannies get into? Quite a lot, as it turns out. This story follows three amateur sleuths who dive headfirst into mystery-solving in hopes of saving their friend. The book blends humor with suspense, delivering plenty of exciting scenes and vivid world-building. I especially loved the cozy small-town atmosphere and rich Southern charm that made Summer Haven feel alive.

The friendship between Lillian and Maggie felt deep and emotional, and I really enjoyed how naturally Sera became part of their circle. My favorite scene was the bathroom scene, which had me laughing so hard I nearly cried. Every character felt unique and brought something special to the story.

If you enjoy funny cozy mysteries filled with friendship, charm, and a touch of chaos, this book is definitely worth picking up.
