Review: The Afterwife by Ellyn Oaksmith

Description:

Dating a widower with four children was never part of Sam’s life plan—especially when his late wife still seems to be running the show.

Sam likes her life exactly the way it uncomplicated, independent, and definitely child-free. Then she meets Ryan—a devastatingly handsome widower with four kids, a complicated life, and a habit of looking at her like she might be the one thing capable of putting romance back into the equation.

Falling for Ryan was never part of the plan. Neither were soccer games, chaotic camping trips, or losing her heart to children who aren’t quite sure they want her around.

And then there’s Claire.

Ryan’s late wife is gone, but somehow she’s everywhere. In the traditions Ryan can’t let go of. In the children grieving their mother. And in Sam’s life itself—offering dating advice, style advice, and nudging Sam toward the role Claire carefully chose for the woman who would never threaten her memory.

What Claire didn’t expect was watching her husband fall quite this hard.

But when a disastrous attempt to bond with the kids tears everything apart, long-buried truths force the entire family to confront the difference between holding on and moving forward.

Because falling in love with a widower is one thing.

Competing with a dead wife is another.

My opinion:

ARC Review: The Afterwife by Ellyn Oaksmith.

Sam co-owns a garage with her friend Mick and loves her carefree life surrounded by her favorite motorcycles. Everything changes when she meets Ryan and is instantly attracted to him. Ryan is kind, charming, and easy to fall for. After a few dates, however, Sam discovers that he's a widower with four children.

That's a major complication for Sam, who has never wanted children. But an even bigger challenge is Ryan's late wife, whose presence still seems to linger over the family. Sam falls hard and fast for Ryan, but winning over his children proves difficult, and competing with the memory of a beloved wife feels impossible. Can Sam and Ryan overcome their differences and confront the real issue standing in their way?

The Afterwife is a romantic comedy with a touch of the paranormal. It combines humor, romance, and heartfelt moments while exploring grief, loss, and the challenges of blending lives after tragedy.

I enjoyed the balance between the lighthearted romantic comedy elements and the more emotional themes. The story doesn't shy away from showing both the joys and the difficulties of a relationship like Sam and Ryan's, which made the characters feel realistic and relatable. Sam and Ryan had wonderful chemistry, and I found both of them very likable. My favorite part of the book was their trip together.

If you enjoy fun romantic comedies with emotional depth, lovable characters, and a hint of paranormal intrigue, The Afterwife may be a great pick for you.
