Emily Sheridan fell in love at a young age and got married while she was still in college. Her dream was to follow her husband to Los Angeles so he could become a famous screenwriter, and together they could build a family. But her dream was crushed almost from the beginning.
While her husband stayed home to write, Emily had to change her plans. She worked hard to provide for both of them while continuing with college. Instead of their lives getting better, things only became harder. After Emily got pregnant, she found better jobs and continued doing everything she could to support her family, while her husband became more closed off and still wasn't working.
Then her husband's spiral put them in an increasingly dangerous situation. Emily had to make some difficult decisions about her future, protect her daughter, and find a way to start over.
This is such a special story that I know I will remember for a long time. It talks about dreams and how life can sometimes throw one obstacle after another in our path. It shows how some people learn to work with what life gives them, while others slowly give up.
I really loved the way this story explores how we treat the people closest to us and the people we love. It also shows that starting over isn't a failure. Sometimes, it is simply a redirection toward a better life.
There are so many life lessons throughout this book, and at times it made me stop and wonder what I would do if I were in Emily's situation. There were also moments when I could relate a lot to her and understand some of the emotions she was experiencing.
I think Hard Lemonade would be a great choice for a book club because there is so much to discuss. The characters, their choices, relationships, dreams, and the difficult situations they face could lead to some really interesting conversations.
I highly recommend Hard Lemonade to all readers who enjoy emotional stories about love, family, difficult choices, second chances, and starting over.
