Review: The Spellbound Cottage by Genevieve K. Thomas

 Cottage

Fix the leaking turret

Find a new home for the pixies

DO NOT fall for the hot handyman

Freshly single and heartbroken, Beatrix Bilberry moves to a tumbledown cottage in the magical village of Little Sparrow.

But her new home comes with unexpected gnome infestations, troublesome pixies, a melodramatic ghost haunting the attic, and Barnaby, an adorably sleepy hearth dragon.

Her annoyingly handsome neighbour Angus takes delight in teasing her about the impossible renovation work. Tall, tattooed, and effortlessly charming, Angus has a way with people and animals that makes him far too easy to fall for… to everyone, it seems, except Beatrix, as his careless comments grate on her nerves.

Besides, Beatrix has no time for romance. Winter is approaching fast, and she’s racing to restore the cottage before the first snowfall. She’s promised her family a magical festive season–and she’s determined not to let them down.

Beatrix works around the clock, but with a complete lack of plastering skills and magical creatures constantly undoing her hard work, she soon realizes there’s only one way to fix Spellbound Cottage. She’ll have to swallow her irritation and accept Angus’s help…But when the meddling cottage keeps locking them in rooms together, Beatrix realizes she’s facing something far more dangerous than rebuilding a opening her heart to love again.

The Spellbound Cottage by Genevieve K. Thomas

Beatrix Bilberry moves into a tumbledown cottage in the magical village of Little Sparrow. She is heartbroken and needs a fresh start. The cottage needs quite a bit of fixing, and she has to hurry because winter is approaching. The problem? The local magical creatures keep undoing all her hard work. So, she has to ask her neighbor Angus for help, even though she isn't exactly fond of him. As he tries to help her, the cottage has other plans and locks them in different rooms. And while the walls of the cottage are slowly coming down, so are the walls around Beatrix's heart. Could she open her heart to love again?

Magical cozy romances are becoming a new obsession of mine, and this one delivered such a fun story. The small-town setting and cozy vibes created the perfect atmosphere for me. I really liked the characters, especially Beatrix and Angus. I loved that they didn't fall for each other instantly, but instead slowly grew closer throughout the story.

The magical creatures were so much fun, and the found family trope is one of my favorites, so I really enjoyed that aspect of the story too. The story has a slow build-up, both in the plot and the romance, with much of it focusing on Beatrix rebuilding the cottage and taking care of her everyday chores. I think this will especially appeal to readers who enjoy a slower, cozy pace.

I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator made the story even more enjoyable, especially with her accent. I also liked how she changed her voice for the different characters without it ever feeling awkward or overdone.

If you enjoy cozy fantasy, magical creatures, small towns, cottage renovations, found family, and a slow-burn romance, this might be a book for you! 🏡✨
