Southern Spirits by Angie Fox is the first book in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series.
Verity Long finds herself in a disastrous situation after calling off her wedding—only to be sued by her cheating ex for the money he spent on the ceremony. Now buried in debt, unemployed, and out of options, she’s forced to sell nearly everything she owns… including her beloved ancestral home. Holding onto a sliver of hope, she delays the sale, wishing for a miracle.
That “miracle” arrives in the most unexpected way—when she accidentally traps a ghost in her house after dumping his ashes in her flower bushes. The ghost, a grumpy but oddly charming gangster, is far from pleased. However, he agrees to help Verity solve her financial problems—on the condition that she eventually sets him free.
As if that weren’t enough chaos, Ellis Wydell—her ex’s brother—approaches her with an offer she can’t refuse. He needs help dealing with a dangerous ghost of his own, and the money is too tempting to pass up. But this case proves to be far more sinister than expected… and it’s not just the ghost that poses a threat.
This is a cozy paranormal Southern mystery filled with ghosts, quirky animals, and a determined amateur sleuth. The writing is engaging, with vivid descriptions that bring the setting to life. The world-building is strong, and the cast of characters—both living and dead—adds plenty of charm and humor.
The gangster ghost was easily my favorite, especially his witty and entertaining interactions with Verity. I also enjoyed the subtle romantic tension between the main characters. The suspense builds nicely, leading to an unexpected and thrilling climax, with a surprising reveal of the true villain.
One standout moment for me was when they solved the mystery and returned to find Joy—it was both satisfying and memorable.
If you enjoy cozy paranormal mysteries with a Southern twist, this book is definitely worth picking up.
